Doha -Sharq Newspaper: 09/06/2011: NHRC has  signed a memorandum of understanding with the Organization of Social Development development in Dubai.  The MoU is aimed at protecting and promoting human rights and the exchange of knowledge and expertise at all levels, within the framework of the Charter of the United Nations on strengthening respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. The agreement was signed by HE Dr. Ali bin Smaikh Al-Marri- NHRC Chairman  -, and His Excellency Mr. Khaled Kamda – Director of  the Social  Development Authority in Dubai – in the presence of a number of officials and staff from both sides.

Doha: (Rayha Newspaper: 06/07/2011): NHRC yesterday gave a party in honour of Dr. Hamda al-Sulati , the Evaluation Institute director and former NHRC Committee member in recognition of her great cooperation and marked efforts in promoting Human Rights in Qatar as exemplified in supervising the NHRC-sponsored research study titled, “Right to Education” aimed at promoting Human Rights Culture within public schools through a set of procedures and measures that are agreed upon in the future between the Supreme Council for Education and the NHRC.

Doha: (East: 29/05/2011):The National Commission for Human Rights received a delegation from the National Commission for Human Rights in the Sultanate of Oman headed by Her Excellency  Ms. Dina Bintl Hamza al-Asfour – Secretary General of Oman National Commission for Human Rights, accompanied by Mr. Saud bin Ali binAbdullah Al Jabri – Member of the Committee and head of the union workers in the Sultanate of Oman, and Mr. Jihad bin Abdullah al-Tai – Member of the Committee.

The visit by the Omani delegation comes as part of the development of mechanisms for cooperation and exchange of experiences and expertise between the twocommittees.

Geneva: (Agencies):  19/5/2011: The National Human Rights Council (NHRC) held an art exhibition on Wednesday on the sidelines of the 24th session of the International Coordinating Committee of National Human Rights Institutions held in Geneva for three days. Committee Chairman Dr. Ali Bin Smikh El Merri inaugurated the exhibit along with United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Navanethem (Navi) Pillay and Chairperson of International Coordinating Committee of National Human Rights Institutions Rosalyn Noonan.

Doha: (The Peninsula: 11/5/2011): Some 13,606 out of 32,662 registered voters turned out to cast their ballots in yesterday’s elections for the fourth term of the Central Municipal Council (CMC).

And amidst low voter turnout (43.3 percent), only one of the four women who contested the crucial polls, managed to win. Sheikha Al Jefairi retained her seat from the Old Airport constituency. 

Poll officials said they were taken by surprise by the low voter turnout and added that they would try and look into the reasons.

Nouakchott : 28/4/2011: (Agencies):  The seventh annual meeting of the Arab National Institutions for Human Rights held

recently in the Mauritanian capital of Nouakchott has unanimously approved the proposal by Qatar National Human

Rights Committee (NHRC) on establishing an Arab national human rights institutions network.

 According to the proposal, the network is to operate on the basis of international standards to encouraging for the

establishment of national institutions on human rights in countries that have not taken this step yet.  UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay opened the meeting.

DOHA: (The Peninsula): 22/4/2011:  The second Gulf Forum for the GCC Deaf Institutions, that concluded in the Ritz Carlton, Doha, Thursday, 21/4/2011,  stressed on the role of media in promoting people with special needs especially those with hearing problems.

The two-day forum, organised by National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) in collaboration with Qatar Cultural Center for

the Deaf and Mute, had brought in special-needs experts from the GCC region.

NHRC Chairman, Dr. Ali Bin Smaikh al-Marry inaguarated NHRC’s new Website and announced an annual world award in the name of Ali Hassan Al Jaber, the Al Jazeera cameraman who was ambushed outside Benghazi last Saturday (12/3/2011) while covering uprisings in Libya.

Thursday, 20 January 2011, New York, Jan 19 2011: The UN’s human rights chief will send a team to Tunisia next week to assess the country’s human rights situation amidst recent political unrest, which her office says has so far led to more than 100 deaths.

“I have been asking myself what my office, and what the international community in general, can do to help the people of Tunisia to take advantage of the opportunity that now exists,” the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, said at a press conference in Geneva today. “While it is still very early days, it is important that the seeds of change are sown wisely and sown now, before former entrenched interests start to reassert themselves, or new threats emerge.”
