Sana’a: (HRITC: 23/12/2008): The third regional training course on upgrading the qualifications of human rights activists and media in Gulf States and Yemen which is organized by Human Rights Information & Training Center HRITC in cooperation with the Foundation for the Future FFF has continued its activities in Sana’a. 

In the coming days, the participant will attend sessions on the role of non-governmental organizations in the disseminating and protecting human rights, and how to set up networks and build regional coalitions, in addition to the mechanisms for the protection of human rights defenders, preparing the governmental and non-governmental reports and the Human Rights Council.

Dr. Nizar Abdul-Kader, the Director of the Geneva Institute for Human Rights in Switzerland praised the training course and its carefully prepared program, adding that the timing of the session is significant  as it coincides with celebrations marking  the sixtieth anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the tenth anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights Defenders and the anniversary of the Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Economic, which was adopted in December 10, 2008

Doha, December 15 (QNA)The First Arab Human Rights Conference in its closing session here this evening called on the Arab countries to join international and regional pacts on human rights particularly the Arab Charter for human rights as well as to work for supporting dealing with mechanisms of international and regional human rights. 

 
The conference urged the Arab league to approve a draft of the strategic action plan on enhancement and protection of Human rights and follow up its implementation through active and efficient frames. 

 
The conference stressed the need to hold inter-Arab and international dialogue session  on the obstacles that prevent activation of positive commitment to the international standards of human rights.

Doha: (NHRC: 14/12/2008): Under the Auspices of H.E. the premier and foreign minister, H.E. SH Hamad Ben Khalifa al-Thani, the 1st Arab Conference for Human Rights kicked off at the Four Seasons Hotel  in Doha today (Sunday, 14th December 2008). 

The two-day conference, organized by the Arab League in cooperation with Qatar, aims to promote the Arab Charter for Human Rights and discuss the work plan of the Arab League strategy for protecting human rights.

Today’s schedule included an opening session, a preliminary session and a workshop, third session.

Opening session:

In his speech at the opening of the Conference, H.E. the Minister of Justice Hassan bin Abdullah al-Ghanem took up the issue of human rights is something that’s deeply rooted in Islamic and Arab culture as reflected in a number of Quranic verses.

Doha: (agencies: 26/11/2008): H.E. NHRC vice president Dr. Ali bin Smaikh al-Marri, participated Wednesday (26/11/2008) in an international forum of civil society organizations held at the Doha Ramada Hotel. The meeting is held in parallel ahead of a major international conference on Financing for Development (FfD) scheduled to take place in Doha on Saturday (29the November 2008).

In a speech at the opening session, H.E.  stressed the importance of the forum, which focuses on financing for development, particularly in light of current social change worldwide and the emergence of an ever expanding role for civil society organizations which are playing an important role in activating popular participation and in supporting development in various aspects.

He emphasized the close relationship between peace, stability and development, and said that this close relationship, interdependent and interrelated is ultimately aimed at people (Human Resources) who are the focus and purpose of Development  

 
  He also pointed out that the twin bond between human rights and economic development is a major global objective in the world of today- an issue highlighted by all the international conventions and taking centre stage in the programmes of governmental and non-governmental organizations.

Paris: (20/11/2008): An NHRC delegation headed by His Excellency Dr. Ali bin Smaikh al-Marri; acting NHRC Chairman today visited the French capital Paris.  

   The delegations schedule included visits to  a number  of Human Rights bodies and institutions where important meetings brought together members of the delegation and a number of officials in the French parliament, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in addition to presidential advisor, Jean-Paul Dolafua and the Minister of State for Human Rights.

 
In a statement to Al-Raya Jean-Paul Dolafua said that his country highly appreciates the pioneering role of Qatar under the leadership of His Highness the Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani in the field  of consolidating a culture of human rights in the Arab region and on the international level. 

 
He added that the two sides are considering a partnership project aiming at strengthening democratic institutions and promoting a culture of human rights stressing that the visit has already yielded the signing of the first protocol in the context of the partnership project the two sides have anticipated.

Doha: (Agencies: 11/11/2008): Qatar today marks the NHRC Secretary General and Dr. Attwan (TOP); and Dr. Obaidan and Dr. Saadadin Ibrahim at forums,The Future of Political Reform in the Arab World under newly elected US president Barak ObamaNational Human Rights Day commencing annually on November 11 with tremendous achievements to showcase at the local and international levels.

An official statement said that Qatar has set up numerous organisations and institutions that promote basic human rights, freedom, justice and equality.

In a press briefing to Qatar News Agency (QNA), Dr Ali bin Simaikh Al Merri, Secretary-general of National Human Right Committee (NHRC), said Qatar has given the greatest importance to human rights. This was followed by formation of several offices for the rights of all segments of society. “Some of these offices are NHRC, Human Right Department both at the Interior and Foreign Ministries, National Office for Combating Trafficking in Humans, Arab Democracy Foundation, and Qatari House among others.

Doha Sheraton: (1/11/2008): H.E. Dr. Ali Ben Smaikh al-Marry, NHRC Secretary General  participated on Saturday 1/11/2008 in the opening session of a forum organized by Jazeera Net marking its 12th anniversary under the theme "The Role of Human Rights Freedoms in promoting Public Freedoms". 

During discussions at the forum, H. E. said the initiative constitutes a substantial addition to the Human Rights Movement in Qatar.
 
 During the forum, Jazeera also announced the launch of the Public Liberties and Human Rights Desk, which will be headed by Sami Al Haj, the Al Jazeera cameraman who was recently released from Guantanamo Bay after six and a half years of detention.

DOHA: (NHRC-27/10/2008):  H.E. Thai ambassador, Swat Shirra Pant and Mr. Sakson Saryol, 1st Secretary at the embassy today visited NHRC and met Secretary General H.E. Dr. Ali Smaikh al-Merry. Means of cooperation between the embassy and NHRC and topics of mutual interest were taken up during the meeting.

The new UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navanethem Pillay on Tuesday opened the ninth session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva; meanwhile, the Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Office in Geneva Ambassador H.E. Abdullah Falah Abdullah al-Dosari delivered his country speech at the session.
 
Tackle Discrimination, Inequality –UN HR Chief

New UN Rights Chief Stresses Need to Tackle Discrimination, Prevent Genocide while Mr. al-Dosari
asserted that marking the 60th anniversary of Universal Declaration of Human Rights together with the 15th anniversary of the Vienna Declaration and Programme of Action constituted an additional incentive to deal with all human rights as universal, indivisible, interdependent and interrelated.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights today stressed the need to address discrimination and inequality, and to do more to prevent genocide, in her first major speech since taking up her new post.

Sept. 09 / QNA / Dr. Ali Bin Smaikh Al-Marri, NHRC  Secretary-General stressed the importance of raising public awareness to the importance of promoting human rights culture adding that Qatar provides all guarantees needed to safeguard and protect human rights of both citizens and residents in the country. 

Speaking at a dialogue session held at ‘The Green Tent" at The Friends of the Environment Centre in Doha, Dr. Al-Merry took up the theme of the dialogue session: "Human Rights of Citizens and Expats in Qatar".  He began by saying that those rights are guaranteed by the country’s constitution, which devotes 24 articles in section III covering the rights and duties of both citizen and expat. The legislation, he added, guarantees freedoms for all. He numerated a number of laws that ensure those rights such as those covering nationality, the settling of administrative disputes, elections and those establishing   the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) as human rights offices at ministries of Foreign and Interior affairs as well as the National Office to Combat Trafficking in Persons and the Qatari Foundation for the Protection of Children and Women.
