Doha-QNA: 26/10/2010: The first meeting of the third NHRC session was held at NHRC new premises in Freij Abdul Aziz last night. During the meeting Dr. Ali Bin Smaikh al-Marry was elected NHRC Chairman, Dr. Yusof Mohamad Obaidan Fakhro, Deputy Chairman and Mariam Bint Abdallah al-Attiyan Secretary General. On 6th October, 2010, HH the Emir issued Emiri Decision no. 30, 2010, establishing the Nation Human Rights Committee, NHRC.

Doha: Qana: 20/10/2010: Qatar’s Islamic Cultural Centre (FANAR) and NHRC signed a contract 19th October 2010 to publish a book in Arabic and English on Human Rights in Islam.  The contract was signed by NHRC secretary general, Her Excellency, Maryam Bint Abdallah al-Attiyah who was accompanied on the occasion by a delegation comprising: Abdallah al-Mahmoud, head of NHRC public relations unit and Mz Rania Fuad Jadallah and an NHRC legal advisor.

On the Fanar side, the contract was signed by Mr. Mohammad al-Ghamidy, Director of the Centre.

Cairo: Qana: 18/10/2010: NHRC Chairman Dr. Ali bin Smaikh Marri, also  Chairman of the Committee of Arab experts on the human rights emanating from the Standing Committee of the Arab human rights, has said  that NHRC activities have  exceeded its surroundings and is now directly involved in  the promotion, protection of and the dissemination of  awareness of  human rights culture in the regional and Arab  domains. 

 Dr. al-Marri was speaking on the sidelines of the Tenth Meeting of the Group of Experts of Permanent Arab Committee for Human Rights.

Beirut – Qana: 17/10/2010: The State of Qatar has been paying  special attention to youth welfare at the national, regional and international levels; and there were many efforts in this regard- the  most important of which was an initiative where Her Highness Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser Almisnid patronaged the establishment of Silatech, an innovative social enterprise. 

 The statement above came in a speech by His Excellency Dr. Ali bin Smaikh Marri, NHRC chairman, delivered on his behalf by Mr. Sultan Al-Jamali, NHRC Director of Administrative and Financial Affairs Department during a regional workshop on youth and active participation in political, economic and social activities, held in Beirut from 18 to 20 Oct.

Doha: (NHRC: 3-4/10/2010):  The Workshop on "Protection of Prisoners and Persons Deprived of their Liberty" concluded it deliberation this afternoon: (Monday: 4/10/10) in the Diplomatic Club. The Workshop was jointly organized by NHRC and "Association for the Prevention of Torture-APT" in Geneva. 

 At the end of the session, certificates of participation in the Workshop were presented to participants by Mr. Sultan Jamali, NHRC head of the administrative and financial Affairs, Mr. Abdullah Al-Mahmoud, and NHRC head of public relations and, Ms. Esther Schaufelberger from the APT.

Casablanca, October 13 (QNA) –  A two-day Arab and Ibero-American meeting for national institutions in charge of protecting human rights was concluded here with a number of recommendations. The recommendations include forming a coordination and follow-up committee with members from Qatar, Morocco, Portugal, Spain, Mexico and Ecuador. 

 Addressing the event, Chairman of Qatar National Human Rights Committee Dr Ali bin Smaikh Al Marri said the meeting provided a real opportunity to build bridge of contacts in the field of human rights in the two regions, although they are far away geographically, but they possess in common what could be a start for cooperative relations with a positive impact on human rights.

Doha: (QNA): 7/10/2010: HH the Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani issued yesterday an Emiri Decision No. 30 of 2010 forming the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC). 

The decision stipulated that the committee is to be made up of the following members: 

Dr Ali bin Saeed Smeikh al-Marri representing the civil society; Dr Yosuf Mohamed Obaidan Fakhro representing the civil society; Dr Norah Khalifa Turki al-Subei representing the civil society; Issa Rashid al-Kaabi  representing the civil society; Dr Mohamed Saif al-Kuwari  representing the civil society; Engineer Abdullah Hussein al-Neima representing the civil society; Fawaz Bakhit al-Jettal   representing the civil society; Dr Asma Abdullah Mohamed al-Attiyah representing the civil society; Amal Abdul Latif al-Mannai representing the civil society; Sheikh Khalid bin Jassim al-Thani  representing the Ministry of the Interior ; Lt. Col. Abdullah Saqr al-Muhannadi representing the Ministry of the Interior; Abdullah Ahmed al-Muhannadi representing Ministry of Labour; Sultan Dhaher al-Mureikhi representing Ministry of Social Affairs; Noor Abdullah al-Malki representing the Supreme Council for Family Affairs.

The committee shall select its chairman and vice-chairman from among its members representing the civil society

To uphold and promote the human rights in the International Treaties which the State of Qatar has acceded to, (such as the Convention Against Torture, the Convention on the Rights of the Child, ILO Conventions 100, 105, 182, etc…)

Doha: (NHRC HQ, 29/9/2010): In cooperation with the Association For the Prevention of Torture (APT) in Geneva, NHRC organizes a workshop under the theme of “The Protection of Prisoners and persons deprived of their Liberty” starting 2-4/10/2010 which will officially open Sunday 3/10/2010 at 8:00 a.m. Doha time at the Diplomatic Club at the (Roshanah Hall). 

 The APT has been leading the international campaign for the adoption, entry into force and effective implementation of the Optional Protocol to the UN Convention against Torture (OPCAT), an international legal instrument which seeks to open all places of detention to international and national scrutiny.
