DOHA: (Agencies: 23/1/2010):  Qatar’s National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) has called for bringing Israeli war criminals to book and prosecuting them for human rights violations in the occupied territories in Palestine.

H.E. The Chairman of NHRC, Dr Ali Semaikh Al Marri, who is attending an Arab League human rights meeting in Cairo, told reporters on Tuesday the convention will be submitting a report with recommendations to the Arab League Committee for Human Rights in this regard.

The Permanent Arab League Committee for Human Rights began at the Arab League headquarters in Cairo on Tuesday under the chairmanship of Al Marri.

A number of experts representing human rights organizations in Arab countries are attending the meet. 

Speaking to reporters after the opening session, Al Marry said that several topics were discussed at the meeting, including procedural by-laws that would facilitate a strong reaction against Israeli violations of human rights in the occupied territories in conformity with the conditions approved by the Arab League Council. Applications by a number of non-governmental organizations to join the session as observers were also taken up at the meet.

Doha: (Raya Newspaper 18/1/2010): Raya newspaper in its issue this morning (18/1/2010) carried a report edited by Anwar al-Khatib in which he stated that al-Raya has obtained a copy the report on the universal periodic review mechanism of the Human Rights Council of the United Nations, which was prepared by the National Committee entrusted with the task to be tabled for review by the Council in its 8th session in Geneva on 8 February.

The report reviewed the Human Rights situation in Qatar in light of the significant legislative and institutional developments and in public awareness the country is undergoing in this respect.

Under the Section subtitled, "Challenges", The report underlined that the promotion and protection of human rights is a strategic choice of the state and as such forms the backbone of the comprehensive reform policy, in the constitutional, economic, social and cultural development fields adopted by the government since His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani – may God protect him –assumed power in the country.

Doha: (Rayah newspaper: 27/12/2009): In the third episode of its H.E. Dr. Ali Ben Smaikh al-Marry, NHRC Chairmanpopular programme, "Decision is Yours",  to be aired tonight at 10:00 p.m. Doha time,  Qatar TV Arabic service will be hosting H.E. the  Chairman of Qatar’s National Human Rights Committee (NHRC), Dr. Ali Ben Samish al-Marry.

Topics to be taken up during the programme will include NHRC role in settling complaints it receives, its response to international reports on the state of human rights affairs in Qatar, its future plans as well as a number of other topics related to Human Rights Issues.

Audience will be received at Studio 2 of al-Jazeera channel for children in the education city. DOHA: (Agencies: 3l11l2009):  In the context of deserve_rt_but_poster.jpgits on-going human rights awareness campaign under the theme, "You deserve the right but you owe the responsibility" aimed at fostering harmonious and better working relationships between the workers and the employers, the National Human Rights Committee-Qatar (NHRC-Qatar) has held a seminar on “Workers’ Basic Rights and Privileges” to leaders of the Nepalese community.

The seminar which was organized in close cooperation with Solidarity Centre-Qatar featured a lecture by Hala Al Ali, legal consultant of NHRC-Qatar, who expounded on labor law in Qatar and its various articles adding that the seminar aims among other things at training trainers that would explain the Qatari Labor law to Nepalese working in Qatar in their own mother tongue. 
  

She also explained that the law does not only protect laborers; it also protects the employer whose interests can be grossly harmed by careless acts or behavior by the employee adding that the word laborer in Qatari law does not only mean a blue collar worker, it also covers white collar employees including Qataris or non Qataris. 

 
 In the same context, Mr. Abdallah Ali al-Mahmoud, NHRC head department of Public Relations and Media information that the training the trainer process is provided for in Qatar’s Labor Law which conforms with international standards in this regard.

Doha: (NHRC: 13/12/2009): The National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) has joined the UN and world countries marking the 61st anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, by stressing that the movement to end all forms of discrimination is among the main principles adopted in Qatar’s constitution.

The Universal Day of Human Rights, which fell on December 10, was observed worldwide this year under the theme “Embrace Diversity and Eliminate Discrimination”.

Speaking at a ceremony held at the Diplomatic Club, NHRC chairman Dr Ali bin Semaikh al-Marri said that the rule of law and respect of human rights have been always part of the state of Qatar.

“Any reading of the current situation in the state of Qatar shows that the country seeks to enhance human rights, democracy and rule of law,” Dr al-Marri said.

Doha: NHRC: (10/12/2009): NHRC marks the 61st  International Human Rights Day today, Thursday, 10th December 2009 when H.E. the NHRC Chairman, Dr. Ali Ben Smaikh Al-Marry  will deliver a speech  at 6:00 pm on the occasion during celebrations to be held on the occasion in the evening on the same day in the Diplomatic Tent at the Diplomatic Club. 

 The attendance will be entertained with a super banquet in their honor at 8:30 pm.    

The promotion and protection of human rights has been a major preoccupation for the United Nations since 1945, when the Organization’s founding nations resolved that the horrors of The Second World War should never be allowed to recur. 

Respect for human rights and human dignity "is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world", the General Assembly declared three years later in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In 1950, all States and interested organizations were invited by the General Assembly to observe 10 December as Human Rights Day (resolution 423(V)).

Doha: (HHRC: 17/11/2009): HE Dr. Ali bin Smaikh Marri, NHRC Chairman, received  yesterday morning at NHRC  headquarters HE Mr. Zhang Si-Joong Korea’s ambassador to Qatar, where they discussed during the meeting issues of human rights and ways of cooperation in the field of human rights;

HE also met with His Excellency Mr. Hamdi Bukhari, Acting Regional Representative of Regional Representation at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in the GCC countries and Mr. Maumoon Muhsin  foreign relations official in the regional representation was discussed at the meeting aspects of joint cooperation between the two sides in the fields of exchanging expertise especially in the field of human rights.

Doha: (Agencies: 10/11/2009):  The closing ceremony of a training programme organized by NHRC in corporation with  the Department of Mesaieed Industrial under the title "Social Responsibility and Human Rights was held at the   Sharq Village Hotel, on Monday (9/11/2009). The ceremony was attended by Dr Yusof Obeidan – NHRC Vice Chairman. The programme lasted from 19 October until 4th November, 2009 and was attended by 250 participants from senior managers and executive leaders in the petroleum sector companies.

In his speech on this occasion Dr.  Obeidan said that these workshops are meant to consolidate efforts aimed at the promotion of human rights and prevent their violation. He pointed out that the organization of the workshop was based on accepted international standards- something that has contributed to its success. He added that NHRC is looking forward to further promote insights into the Human Rights principles so as improve the performance of the Human Rights organizations both at home and abroad.

DOHA: (NHRC: Millennium Hotel: 10/11/2009): NHRC  held a seminar entitled "The right to housing" at the Millennium Hotel today as part of a series of events and seminars ahead of celebrations marking the annual anniversary of the Emiri decree  establishing the Commission in 2002.

Opening the seminar, Dr Yusof Obaidan, NHRC vice president outlined the goal of events held by the Committee as a prelude to commemorate the establishment of the commission; NHRC legal  consultant, Mohamed Fouad, meanwhile made a presentation about ‘The Right to Housing" from the perspective of international law; the function concluded with Khalifa Hitmi al-Hitmi Assistant Director of Housing at The Ministry of Social Affairs, addressing the subject of housing rights in Qatar through the Housing Act.

In dealing with the objective of establishing the Commission in preparation for these events to celebrate the National Day of Human Rights in Qatar,  Dr. Obeidan said that those activities are designed to shed light on the rights stipulated in international law and human rights education in all fields, stressing that NHRC HAS  developed a strategic plan including workshops and seminars and conferences for this purpose as well as creating  partnerships for the purpose of coordinating efforts  at the local, regional and international levels.

For his part, NHRC Legal Counsel Lawyer Mohamed Fouad focused on the issue in international law and explained that human rights are comprise a set of basic needs to ensure that everyone can live in dignity and that these rights embrace political, civil, social and economic.

Doha 🙁 NHRC 8/11/2009 🙂 NHRC marks Qatar’s Open invitation to attend seminars organized by NHRC to mark Nation Human Rights Day, held at Millenium Hotel, 8-10, November, at 7 pmNational Day for Human Rights annually on the 11th of November. In this context NHRC is to coordinate a number of seminars and lectures aimed at promoting human rights.

His Excellency Dr. Ali bin al-Marri Smaikh – NHRC Chairman, has said in previous statements  to the press that human rights in Qatar are maintained and protected thanks to the generous guidance of His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the Emir and support the political leadership.

For his part, Mr. Abdullah Ali Al Mahmoud, head of NHRC Media and Public Relations Department told the Doha Arabic daily Al-Raya last October that NHRC will organize symposia over three days starting from November 8 to 10 November to mark the National Day of Human rights in Qatar. He added that government representatives will participate in these seminars which will address the issues related to human rights including the right to education in Qatar and the right to housing.

In his press statement, Dr. Al-Marri said that the keen interest of the State to protect human rights is evident in the establishment of several institutions including NHRC itself as well as the Human Rights Department within the Interior Ministry and the Human Rights Bureau at the foreign Ministry, The Qatari House for the Lodging and welfare and the Bureau for Combating Trafficking in humans.
