Doha Sheraton: (1/11/2008): H.E. Dr. Ali Ben Smaikh al-Marry, NHRC Secretary General  participated on Saturday 1/11/2008 in the opening session of a forum organized by Jazeera Net marking its 12th anniversary under the theme "The Role of Human Rights Freedoms in promoting Public Freedoms". 

During discussions at the forum, H. E. said the initiative constitutes a substantial addition to the Human Rights Movement in Qatar.
 
 During the forum, Jazeera also announced the launch of the Public Liberties and Human Rights Desk, which will be headed by Sami Al Haj, the Al Jazeera cameraman who was recently released from Guantanamo Bay after six and a half years of detention.

DOHA: (NHRC-27/10/2008):  H.E. Thai ambassador, Swat Shirra Pant and Mr. Sakson Saryol, 1st Secretary at the embassy today visited NHRC and met Secretary General H.E. Dr. Ali Smaikh al-Merry. Means of cooperation between the embassy and NHRC and topics of mutual interest were taken up during the meeting.

The new UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navanethem Pillay on Tuesday opened the ninth session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva; meanwhile, the Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Office in Geneva Ambassador H.E. Abdullah Falah Abdullah al-Dosari delivered his country speech at the session.
 
Tackle Discrimination, Inequality –UN HR Chief

New UN Rights Chief Stresses Need to Tackle Discrimination, Prevent Genocide while Mr. al-Dosari
asserted that marking the 60th anniversary of Universal Declaration of Human Rights together with the 15th anniversary of the Vienna Declaration and Programme of Action constituted an additional incentive to deal with all human rights as universal, indivisible, interdependent and interrelated.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights today stressed the need to address discrimination and inequality, and to do more to prevent genocide, in her first major speech since taking up her new post.

Sept. 09 / QNA / Dr. Ali Bin Smaikh Al-Marri, NHRC  Secretary-General stressed the importance of raising public awareness to the importance of promoting human rights culture adding that Qatar provides all guarantees needed to safeguard and protect human rights of both citizens and residents in the country. 

Speaking at a dialogue session held at ‘The Green Tent" at The Friends of the Environment Centre in Doha, Dr. Al-Merry took up the theme of the dialogue session: "Human Rights of Citizens and Expats in Qatar".  He began by saying that those rights are guaranteed by the country’s constitution, which devotes 24 articles in section III covering the rights and duties of both citizen and expat. The legislation, he added, guarantees freedoms for all. He numerated a number of laws that ensure those rights such as those covering nationality, the settling of administrative disputes, elections and those establishing   the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) as human rights offices at ministries of Foreign and Interior affairs as well as the National Office to Combat Trafficking in Persons and the Qatari Foundation for the Protection of Children and Women.

Doha: (NHRC-10/7/2008): At a ceremony held at the Zubara Hall in the Millennium Hotel yesterday, Wednesday, 9/7/2008, NHRC staff bade farewell to His Excellency Dr. Khalid Bin Mohammed Al-Attiyah, the founding president of the institution who had been appointed in the latest cabinet reshuffle on 1st July 2008 by HH the Emir SH Hamad Ben Khalifa al-Thani as cabinet minister of the newly-created International Cooperation Ministry.

The ceremony began with an introductory speech delivered by Mr. Hamad Saeed al-Hassan, Director of the Public Relations and Information Department, who spoke about the multi-pioneering virtues of His Excellency Dr. Khalid that had enabled him to place the institution in record time amongst the best known of its kind on the national, regional and international levels.

The gathering was then addressed by His Excellency NHRC Secretary General; Dr. Ali Bin Smaikh Al-Marri who expressed his personal thanks and appreciation as well as those of the entire NHRC family to Dr. Khalid and their gratitude for his fruitful efforts that qualitatively projected NHRC as a distinguished institution on all levels at home and abroad.

On behalf of NHRC members, Dr. Yusof Obaidan focused on the transparent and democratic style adopted by Dr. Khalid in running the affairs of the institution based on the popular Arab saying: "Freedom of expression, which usually entails conflict of ideas,  does not negate amicability."

Doha: Millennium Hotel: (7/7/2008): His Excellency Dr. Ali Bin  Smaikh al-Mary Secretary General of the National Human Rights Committed (NHRC) yesterday addressed the opening session of the first regional conference of the Regional Programme for Human Rights Activists in the Gulf states and Yemen held at the Millennium Hotel during the period from 6 to 10 July.  

Also addressing the opening session was Mr. Abdul Qewi Salem, Executive Director of Yemen‘s Human Rights Information Training Centre (HRITC). Meanwhile, Dr. Youssef Obaidan, a member of the National Human Rights Committee and professor of political science, University of Qatar, and Dr.  Ahmed Qassem Hamidi professor of international humanitarian law at the Law Faculty praised the session which they both said aims to develop the skills of human rights activists and journalists who are participating in the session from various Arab Gulf states and Yemen.

Doha: Millennium Hotel: (6/7/2008): NHRC and Yemen’s Human Rights Information Training Centre (HRITC) are jointly organizing a session on The Programme for Human Rights Activists in The Arabian Peninsula and the Gulf States.  The session opened at the Millennium Hotel this morning and will last to Thursday on 10th July 2008.    

The programme of the session includes topics relating to human rights including the philosophic and historic background of the development of the Human Rights movement. In this context technical and legal terms of reference will be discussed as well as UN functional bodies and organizations. 

 
The programme will seek to clearly define Civil and Political Rights and the mechanisms related to implementing them in the light of International Convention Against Torture.

The programme will also stress the importance of peaceful settlement of disputes through dialogue and other democratic procedures.

oha: (NHRC-23/06/2008): The sub-regional workshop called NHRIs and Human Rights Defenders for West Asian NHRIs jointly organized by NHRC, APF and ISHR opened at the Doha Millennium, Simsima Hall yesterday with opening speeches from NHRC secretary general, Dr. Ali Ben Smaikh al-Merry, Isabelle Scherer, Director of the International Services Organization for human rights and APF project manager, Suraina Pasha.  

 
In his speech to the workshop, His Excellency the Secretary General welcome the  participants wishing success for the forum aiming to assist key staff from NHRIs to understand the role and functions of human rights defenders and the international standards and mechanisms that protect their rights. H.E. also stated that the organizers have designated a number of highly qualified trainers to supervise and conduct the workshop. Dr. al-Merry particularly underlined  the role of civil society institutions and the private sector, in supporting institutions on the national, regional and international levels to ensure full respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.

Doha: (Marriott Hotel: Agencies: 8/6/2008): A number  of measures for Qatar implementation of the UN International Convention on Rights of People With Disabilities were proposed at a conference jointly organised by the office of the UN Special Rapporteur and the Supreme Council for Family Affairs (SCFA) yesterday.

Qatar ratified the convention on May 12 but is yet to sign the Optional Protocol, which serves as an instrument for policy-making and as a basis for technical and economic co-operation among countries.

Participating in the discussions were officials of ministries, non-governmental organizations, the Emiri Diwan and charitable organizations as well as people with disabilities (PWD).

Doha:(Millennium Hotel-2/6/2008): A session for training trainers in the field of promoting Human Rights Awareness jointly organized by NHRC  and the Human Rights  Information and Training Centre (HRITC) in Yemen opened at the Millennium Hotel yesterday.
 
 Addressing the opening session joint activity. H.E. NHRC secretary general,  Dr. Ali Ben Smaikh al-Marry said that the 6-day session main objective is part and parcel of a concerted campaign that aims at promoting Human Rights culture on one hand and at laying solid foundations for fruitful cooperation between the NHRC and the HRITC, on the other.

 
Having reviewed the history of the movement for promoting human rights starting with the signing of the Magna Carta in 1214 and up to the American Declaration of Independence document signed by American president Thomas Jefferson in 1776, H.E. pointed out that Human Rights culture will remain a basic issue that needs an on-going rejuvenation based on creative thinking geared towards promoting awareness of the subject on all intellectual and cultural group levels in society. This, H.E. added is detrimental to success in combating the dangers inherent in Human Rights violations.
