17 August 2007 – Amid mounting fears that the death and injury tolls will rise following the major earthquake which rocked Peru earlier this week, the United Nations is stepping up efforts to provide relief to victims.
So far, local authorities have confirmed 510 deaths, 1,000 injuries and over 16,000 homes destroyed. But these numbers could climb in coming days.

Quoting Russian Foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov, the Russian news agency, Interfax, said that the United States of America and his country, have agreed to set up a joint group, to discuss human rights related issues.  

In an article published by a Russian newspaper, Mr. Lavrov said that Presidents George W. Bush and Vladimir Putin have strongly supported the initiative, when they last met in
Kennebunkport, the Maine summer retreat of George Bush Senior, on 3rd July 2007.

UN: 4 April 2008 – Avowing that the situation in Sudan’s Darfur region remains as grim, or worse, than it was four years ago when the Security Council first took up the issue, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today called for an immediate focus on the fundamentals of peace and the protection of civilians in the strife-torn region.

“Continued suffering is both unforgivable and preventable, and the potential for peace and progress is great,” Mr. Ban said in a statement that coincided with the release of his latest monthly report to the Council on the deployment of the African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID).

“Let us not dwell on what has been lost in Darfur, but call upon all parties and stakeholders to immediately focus on what can be achieved by ending the hostilities, protecting civilians and coming to the negotiating table in good faith to secure the peace the Darfurians desperately need now,” he added.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon was shocked and saddened by the series of attacks that took place Tuesday in northern Iraq in the villages of Qahtaniya, al-Jazeera and Tal Uzair, which reportedly left at least 200 people dead and many more wounded. He extended his deepest condolences to the families of those killed and his wishes for a full and speedy recovery to those wounded.

The Secretary-General reiterated in the strongest terms his condemnation of such attacks against civilian targets, including the one on a bridge in Taji, north of Baghdad, on the same day. Nothing can justify such indiscriminate violence against innocent civilians.
