Dr. Ali bin Smaikh Al-Marri, president of Qatar National Human Rights Committee, said that despite the international mobilization against the blockade on Qatar and the great response to the humanitarian situation raised by the National Human Rights Committee, the blockading countries are only toughening their blockade and deliberately prolonging it. Al Marri added, “The humanitarian crisis in the Gulf region has long been overdue, and only people are affected. It is time for urgent legal action to pursue those responsible for violations caused by the blockade, whether they are individuals or institutions.” This came during a meeting with a number of representatives of Italian human rights organizations and media institutions in the Italian capital, Rome, in the presence of Ambassador Abdul Aziz Ahmed Al Malki, Qatar’s Ambassador to Italy, on the sidelines of his participation in the symposium organized by the Italian Institute for Political and International Studies (ISPI). A number of Italian organizations, media and writers, took part in the meeting, including Professor Julio Lana, President of the Legal Union for the Protection of Human Rights; HE Francesco Rossi, Secretary-General of the Union Fund for the Protection of Human Rights; Mr. Mario Miellello, Secretary-General of the Legal Union for Human Rights; Mr. Gore Josancny, journalist at RAI TV, and HE Dr. Vittorio Lungi, journalist and consultant at the International Labor Organization.
Al-Marri stressed that the National Human Rights Committee has formed through its contacts a network of great supporters to the victims of the blockade, revealing the direction of the National Committee to establish an international coalition to combat the effects of the blockade on civilians and punish those who violate the basic rights of civilians.
Al Marri added: “The countries of the blockade imposed the blockade on the citizens of the Gulf and violated their basic rights more than blockading the State of Qatar, whose officials confirmed the stability of the situation in the political and economic tracks.” He pointed out that there is no intention of the blockade countries to end this humanitarian crisis, but they are actually threatening to prolong it with placing more sanctions on civilians. Dr. Al-Marri stressed that the National Human Rights Committee is considering other options to lift the injustice off citizens and residents in Qatar.
Al-Marri explained that the National Human Rights Committee monitors all speeches by officials of the blockade countries in preparation for submitting them to the international human rights mechanisms in order to determine responsibility. Al Marri added, “There are movements by the countries of the blockade for funded campaigns to justify the violations and to cause tragedies upon civilians. Those campaigns did not convince anyone; on the contrary, they just received more international condemnation.” He asked: “How is it possible to organize conferences and fund campaigns to justify violations of human rights?” “We have a critical precedent in promoting violations and cracking down on activists and human rights organizations.”
