Doha, 22 February Ritz Carlton: Her Highness Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser Al-Misnid – wife of His Highness the Emir, SH Hamad Ben Khalifa al-Thani, this morning, Monday, 22.2.2010, honoured with her presence the Forum organized by the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) at the Ritz-Carlton to discuss a draft document of the Universal Declaration of human dignity.
The opening session was addressed by former High Commissioner for Human Rights of the United Nations, Dr Mary Robinson, former Lebanese Prime Minister, Dr. Salim Al Hoss, Her Excellency Dr. / Huda Ali Abdul Latif Alban, Human Rights Minister of the Republic of Yemen, and finally His Excellency, NHRC Chairman, Dr. Ali bin Smaikh al-Marri.
Dr. Robinson spoke about the history of her participation at the official level in the promotion of the international human rights movement and the contributions of a number of attendees at the forum in the same area. She highlighted the goal of the meeting, which is to prepare an agenda of international human rights the international community can adopt during the next decade.
Dr. Hoss spoke about the limits imposed by politics on the issues of freedom and dignity, and concluded that the application of a proper democratic system at all levels- local, regional and international, is the only guarantee for all people around the globe to enjoy a satisfactory, effective margin of both freedom and dignity.
Dr. Hoda meanwhile highlighted in her speech what she described as being a proper concept of human rights which she added is an indivisible concept because it has it roots in "human dignity" which in turn is, in Islamic terms, a human in-born feature that can neither be acquired nor abandoned.
The last of the speakers at the opening session was His Excellency NHRC President, Dr. al-Merry who mainly focused on the draft document of the Universal Declaration of human dignity which he said NHRC would submit to the General Assembly of the United Nations.
As an introduction, H.E said that in preparation for the document, NHRC had had close consultations with an elite group of senior staff of thought and opinion in the field of human rights at the international and regional levels, on the one hand, and put efforts of the State of Qatar, in promoting human rights, on all levels-local, regional and international under the wise leadership of their Highness the Emir, SH Hamad Ben Khalifa al-Thani and Sheikha / Mozah, wife of HH the Emir, on the other.
Later three forum meetings were scheduled to discuss topics and issues related to the Universal Declaration of human dignity. An open discussion of the declaration document was also scheduled for the same purpose.
The session is expected to issue the forum’s final statement in the evening including recommendations on what was being discussed and debated.
