HE Chairperson of the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) Maryam bint Abdullah Al Attiyah underlined the State of Qatar’s adherence to international commitments and the Paris Agreement on reducing carbon emissions, and to and strengthening its initiatives in the field of climate change mitigation and environmental sustainability efforts.
This came in statements on the occasion of the NHRC participation in the initiative of the Ministry of Municipality to plant one million trees, and HE the Chairperson’s planting of tree No. 750 under the name “National Human Rights Committee”.
HE Maryam bint Abdullah Al Attiyah underlined the importance of trees in the ecosystem and on human health, noting that the NHRC participation in the initiative contributes directly to the consolidation of the concepts of caring for the environment for its positive contributions to create a healthy life and a healthy society.
HE stressed the need to continue the existing efforts to raise awareness and environmental education, and join hands in this regard with the concerned authorities to raise societal awareness for a “green Qatar”.
HE the NHRC Chairperson commended the UN Human Rights Committee’s adoption of a resolution recognizing that the enjoyment of a healthy and sustainable environment is a universal right, while calling on all countries to work together to make this achievement a reality.
She noted that recognizing the right to a healthy environment at the global level will support the efforts to address environmental crises in a more coordinated and effective manner, help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, provide stronger protection for rights and people who defend the environment, and create a world that enables harmony with nature.
For his part, HE Deputy Chairperson of the National Human Rights Committee Dr. Mohammed bin Saif Al Kuwari said that the NHRC will take care of this tree which bears its name, as it is a symbol of the right to the environment, stressing that the launch of such an initiative by the National Human Rights Committee comes at the heart of its interest in the environment and its belief in the need to preserve its natural resources and expand the green area, stemming from its social responsibility and community partnership to raise the environmental and health awareness.
Dr. Al Kuwari highlighted Qatar’s commitment to the environment and its ratification of all relevant international agreements, and then its implementation and submission of an annual report on the environment and climate to the United Nations; adding that the NHRC will plant more than 2,000 trees distributed all over the country.
