he National Human Rights Committee(NHRC) held a training workshop entitled “The European Union and Human Rights: Fundamentals, Visions and Expectations” in cooperation with the European Parliament’s Subcommittee on Human Rights (DROI).
Director of the Programs and Education Department at NHRC, Hamad Salem Al Hajri said that the workshop is considered the first work of many of the various training workshops that will be presented by NHRC during the coming period, in cooperation with human rights organizations, it is carried out for the benefit of government agencies and civil society organizations in Qatar.
He added that the workshop came within the framework of fruitful cooperation with all actors in the field of human rights, with the aim of familiarizing themselves with the European human rights system, promoting and protecting these rights, and discussing current and future challenges.
Director of the Programs and Education Department at NHRC praised the cooperation of the attendees and discussions included in the workshop, affirming that the training workshop acquired the participants a lot of knowledge related to the European human rights system.
For his part, Secretary-General of the No Peace Without Justice and the main lecturer of the workshop Dr. Niccolo Figa-Talamanca, valued reforms related to labor laws and the regulation of the entry and exit of expatriates and their residency, and said that the State of Qatar has achieved huge drastic changes with regard to the conditions of expatriate workers, not only in the context of material conditions, health care, housing and its requirements, and the inspection of housing sites and workplaces, but the reforms included more significant fundamental changes. He indicated that the amendments, in essence, allowed those who come to work and reside, to engage in society and a sense of belonging to work and society.
Talamanca added that the reforms undertaken by the State of Qatar during the past five years were made in accordance with the laws issued by the State of Qatar, and the NHRC made significant contributions in this regard.
Secretary-General of the No Peace Without Justice stressed the importance of sustaining these reforms and changes, adding that these human rights reforms are not subject to a temporary situation, but rather come within the context of society’s behavior.
