Doha: NHRC: SHARQ Newspaper: ( 20/06/2011): Representing HE Dr. Ali bin Smaikh Marri, NHRC chairman, Mr. Mohammed bin Abdullah Al Ibrahim Maadheed NHRC director of the department of Public Relations and Media, today opened a training course for preachers and mosque Immams jointly organized by the NHRC and the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs, during the period from 20 to 23 June.
The opening session was attended by Dr. Mohammed Salah Desouki advocacy and president of the Institute of Islamic Sciences, Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs.
In his opening speech Mr. Mohammed Abdullah Al-Ibrahim Maadheed said that since its inseption the NHRC sought to disseminate and promote a culture of Human rights amongst all parties and groups in the state through organizing courses, workshops and seminars. Mr. Maadeed also stressed that the promotion of a Human Rights Culture in the country is not only an NHRCE responssibility; rather, he went on to say, a shared responsibility of all actors in the state, and that the NHRC is only one of a number of national mechanisms geared towards promoting human rights in the Qatari community.
He then stressed that that the coming period would witness further cooperation and coordination between NHRC and Awqaf, to deepen the partnership between the two parties due to its importance and effectiveness in the field of Human Rights as Awqaf offers an important essential window to a multipupose Islamic community characterized by a well-established record of respect to Human Rights which would readily enable NHRC to achieve its objectives.
The training course would cover several topics including human rights terminology and an introduction to international humanitarian law and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Covenant of International Civil and Political Rights and the International Covenant on Social, Economic and Cultural Rights. It also discusses the national and international mechanisms for the protection of human rights as well ast the Conventions against all Forms of Discrimination against Women, Children’s rights and labor rights.
In a press statement Mr. Maadheed said that NHRC is organizing several other events during this year, including a workshop on international protection of refugees in cooperation with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in October and a seminar on the role of media in issues related to people with special needs in November.
Maadheed explained that the committee is seeking to make this current training session an annual event .
33 preachers and mosque immams are participating in this training session. NHRC organized a similar session in 2007.
