Alexandria – Sharq News paper: (19/9/2010): NHRC President, Dr. Ali bin Smaikh al- Marri leads Qatar delegation to Alexandria second Regional conference on Capital Punishment-the Death Penalty in the Middle East and North Africa. The delegation also includes Mr. Jabir Bin Saleh Ahoil, NHRC Legal Department Director.
The conference, held under the auspices of the International Organization for Penal Reform and the Arab Center for Independence of the judiciary, opens Monday (20/9/2010) at the headquarters of the Swedish Institute in Alexandria.
Conference agenda will focus on the implications of a UN General Assembly resolution calling for the abolition of capital punishment with a view of implementing it in a way that avoids contradiction with Islamic Sharia laws. The conferees will also review the nature of mechanisms required to enable more Arab countries to sign to implementing the resolution.
Delegates representing activists from civil organizations in Jordan, Palestine, Yemen, Bahrain, Algeria, Turkey, and Egypt will also be attending said conference.
Conference organizers are meanwhile planning to convene a final session to announce the crème content of the strategy they intend to adopt to proceed towards abolishing capital punishment in the region with a view of submitting their findings to decision-makers and authors of legislation.
