Doha: (Agencies 21/04/2010): H.E. NHRC Chairman, Dr. Ali Bin Smaikh al-Marry yesterday met with the High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay on the sidelines of the first Gulf Forum of National Human Rights institutions held at the Ritz Carlton Doha 20-21 April, 2010.
During the meeting, they discussed ways of cooperation, partnership and exchange of experiences; they also discussed the role to be played by the United Nations Centre for Training, Documentation and Information in the field of human rights in South Asia and the Arab region, which will start operations in Qatar soon. The Centre is expected to provide training and offer expertise in the field of human rights for the region and especially for those newly established partnerships with the NHRC. Ms Pillay requested NHRC’s support in this area.
For his part, NHRC president welcomed the request by the High Commissioner and expressed readiness to act in partnership and full cooperation with the Centre, promising to NHRC’s experience at the disposal of the United Nations Centre; H.E. further informed Ms. Pillay that the Gulf Forum of National Human Rights institutions will be held annually in the GCC countries and that he will invite the GCC Secretariat to establish a standing committee of the Board on human rights and work in coordination with national institutions on human rights in the region.
The meeting was attended by a number of senior NHRC officials and members of the delegation accompanying the UN Human Rights Commissioner.
