DOHA (QNA: 17/3/2009): Qatar National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) and the American Centre for International Labor Solidarity signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) Tuesday 17th March 2009, on cooperation in training and exchange of data and expertise on labor.
The MoU was signed for NHRC by its Chairman, Dr Ali bin Smeikh Al Merri, while Ellie Larson, Executive Director, signed it for the American Solidarity Centre in the presence of the US ambassador to Qatar, Joseph Evan LeBaron; the Director General of the Qatari Foundation for Combating Human Trafficking, Miriam Al Malki, and Heba F El-Shazli, Regional Programme Director of the American Solidarity Centre.
Addressing a press conference on the occasion, Dr Al Merri said the MoU was a partnership between the NHRC and the American Centre for training opportunities and technical and technological expertise related to the rights of an expatriate workforce.
For her part, Ellie Larson voiced delight on signing of the MoU between the two sides and noted that the commitment of the two sides to the protection of human rights in Qatar and the American Center’s long experience in this field would be a powerful combination.
Listening, openness and close collaboration were the most effective ways of protecting the less fortunate among us. The National Human Rights Committee and Solidarity Center understand this better than anyone and that is why they have decided to embark on this path together, she said.
She congratulated the NHRC on the launch of its public awareness campaign against human trafficking. The campaign is yet another example of the many important steps taken by Qatar over the past 14 years to promote human rights, she said.
Earlier, ambassador LeBaron delivered a speech before the signing of the MoU in which he said that NHRC’s genuine commitment to the goals of the human rights movement and the Center’s expertise in this area, will form a strong coalition together
