Doha: (Agencies: 10/11/2009): The closing ceremony of a training programme organized by NHRC in corporation with the Department of Mesaieed Industrial under the title "Social Responsibility and Human Rights was held at the Sharq Village Hotel, on Monday (9/11/2009). The ceremony was attended by Dr Yusof Obeidan – NHRC Vice Chairman. The programme lasted from 19 October until 4th November, 2009 and was attended by 250 participants from senior managers and executive leaders in the petroleum sector companies.
In his speech on this occasion Dr. Obeidan said that these workshops are meant to consolidate efforts aimed at the promotion of human rights and prevent their violation. He pointed out that the organization of the workshop was based on accepted international standards- something that has contributed to its success. He added that NHRC is looking forward to further promote insights into the Human Rights principles so as improve the performance of the Human Rights organizations both at home and abroad.
In a statement to QNA, Dr. Tahir Bo-jalal, lecturer at the workshop and NHRC legal counselor referred to subjects taken at the workshop with the aim of raising awareness of the concept of social responsibility and all recent developments related to the issue on the international and domestic levels.
He added that the workshop also aims at promoting a culture of human rights within the companies participating in the activity with an additional objective of creating some sort of partnership between companies and civil society organizations geared towards the dissemination of human culture.
Participants have meanwhile stressed the need to draft the proper recommendations to help NHRC to soon issue and publish a code of conduct of Social Responsibility for companies operating in the country to abide by.
The participants expressed great satisfaction with the program, which also addressed a number of important related issues such as sustainable development, international reference points for social responsibility and, in particular spending under the international "Global Compaq"-international corporate social responsibility, as well as the UN Initiative of Change Report and the possibility of formulating an approach framework for "Social Auditing".
The ceremony included an award of recognition presentation to major companies participating in the workshop including Qatar Fertilizer Company, Qatar Fuel Additives Company Limited, Al-Seif Company Ltd, Qatar Petrochemical Company, Qatar aluminum refinery, Qatar Petroleum, Qatar Chemical Company Ltd., the country’s limited Phenyl, and operations gas in Qatar Petroleum.
