Cairo: (QNA: 21/7/2009): The works of the sixth session of experts of the Permanent Arab League Committee for Human Rights (PLCH) began at the Arab League Head Quarters in Cairo today under the chairmanship of His Excellency, Dr. Ali Ben Smaikh al-Merry, the president of the Qatari National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) and the participation of a number of experts representing human rights organizations in Arab countries.
Speaking to reporters after the opening session, Dr. al-Merry said that, several topics were discussed during the meeting including procedural by-laws that would facilitate a strong reaction against Israeli violations of human rights in the occupied territories in conformity with outlines and conditions approved by the Arab League Council. Applications by a number of non-governmental organizations to join the session as observers were also taken up as well as updating the Arab Charter of Child Rights.
Dr. al-Merry added that the session will submit a report to the PLCH containing a number of recommendations aimed at facilitating the tracking of Israeli war criminals and prosecuting them. His Excellency then elaborated on the necessity of joint Arab action in this regard adding that coordination with international efforts working in the same direction was extremely necessary to avoid duplication and dispersion.
In this respect, H.E. said that Qatar has individually developed a number of mechanisms that could be developed and adopted by the Arab League which can implement the developed Qatari example collectively.
The meeting, Dr. Ali concluded, has also designated the 16th of March as the Arab Day for Human Rights.
