Doha: (NHRC-31/1/2009): The 5-day Workshop on Training journalists on Media Coverage of Human Rights issues jointly organized by NHRC and the Dar al-Al-Sharq Training and Media Centre concluded at the Doha Millennium Hotel The on Thursday 29th January 2009. More than 120 participants representing the local media and legal bodies, besides university students, among others, completed the course, which began on January 25.
The training focused on legal and reporting skills with specific reference to human rights, and on improving coverage and public knowledge on rights-related issues.
Speaking at the conclusion ceremony, Khalid Abdul Raceme Al Saied, Editor-in-Chief of The Peninsula, said the workshop was a continuation of the cooperation between Dar Info and the NHRC.
Yahya Alawad Adam, Director of Dar Info, said the workshop had been one of the most successful ever held in terms of quality and the number of participants. The participants and the organisers agreed to publish a monthly newspaper under the supervision of the NHRC.
The comprehensive training in the workshop covered legal issues, the importance of the media’s role in promoting human rights and the level of coverage of the issues in the local media.
Key speakers at the function were Dr Hassan Al Sayed, Dean of Law Faculty at Qatar University, Dr Ashraf Jalal, Dr Abdulmutalab Sidiq and Mahmoud Qelander.
Certificates were presented to the participants during the conclusion ceremony.
