Dr. Ali bin Smaikh Al Marri, Vice President and Secretary General of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions pointed to the need for the transitional government to provide the necessary support to civil society organizations. Dr. Al-Marri congratulated Lieutenant General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, First Vice President of the Sudanese Transitional Sovereignty Council and Commander of the Rapid Support Forces on the occasion of the election of Sudan to the Human Rights Council, representing the African Group for the year 2021, stressing at the same time that this election imposes on Sudan great obligations in line with the confidence of the international community in general and the African group in particular.
This came during the first meeting of General Dagalo with Dr. Ali bin Smaikh today in his office at the headquarters of the transitional government. The Secretary-General of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions praised Sudan’s accession to the “Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment” and “The International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance”. Al Marri welcomed the decision to establish the Commission’s Steering Committee and stressed the commitment of the Global Alliance to support Sudan in all areas of human rights. Al Marri called for the establishment of a dialogue between the Sudanese government and the Global Alliance. At the same time, he stressed that the transitional phase requires the concerted efforts of all governmental efforts side by side with the efforts of civil society organizations in order to advance human rights.
Dr. Al-Marri called for the development of a national strategy for human rights that would be the basic building block for achieving democracy, justice and the rule of law. Al Marri welcomed the lifting of economic sanctions on Sudan and said: These sanctions had serious repercussions on the enjoyment of basic human rights and called on the international community to accelerate arrangements and procedures related to lifting the economic blockade. Dr. Ali bin Smaikh Al-Marri participated with Lieutenant General Muhammad Hamdan Dagalo at the conclusion of the project to raise the capabilities of regular forces and law enforcement officials on international standards for the protection of human rights organized by the Geneva Institute for Human Rights for the benefit of the Rapid Support Forces, noting that the Global Alliance for Human Rights looks forward to cooperation and communication with Sudanese institutions and with all stakeholders in Sudan. Al Marri said: We will be at the disposal of Sudan and its people. He thanked His Excellency the First Vice President for his invitation to participate in the conclusion of the project and for his efforts. He also thanked all officials in the state, civil society organizations and all stakeholders, pointing out that this project falls within the issue of strengthening and raising the capabilities of government agencies and civil society organizations. The Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions in Geneva welcomes this initiative again, calling for an intensification of such courses, which greatly contribute to the promotion and protection of human rights. In his meeting with civil society organizations at the headquarters of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner in Sudan, which witnessed wide participation from civil society, activists and human rights defenders, Al-Marri stressed the need to engage civil society organizations in all dialogues related to the law establishing the National Commission for Human Rights in Sudan and called for supporting civil society organizations, building relationships with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, and building solid relationships with the Commission in this regard.
