UN: (9/1/2008): WFP spokesperson in Palestinian occupied territories Kristie Campbell has warned that 80% of the Gaza Strip population is now dependent of WFP aid.
In an interview with UN Radio, she added that since June, the population there is facing another problem-obtaining different types of food because of the closures imposed on the territory by Israel.
The population, she went on to say, are feeding on a limited diet component for different reasons including the sharp drop in income-a situation that has led to a number of them suffering from under-nourishment over the past seven or six months.
A major issue facing WFP at the beginning of the new year, she stressed, is lack of funding activities centering on ability to purchase food and distribute it amongst the needy.
The budget for those activities, she added, is put at fifty million US dollars, 40% of which is allocated for the Gaza Strip about twenty million US dollars.
WFP and UNRWA supply more than 1.1 million Gazans with food aid. The population of the territory is put at 1.5 million people.
