Ms. Mariam Al Attiyah, the Secretary-General of the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) met on Tuesday with the visiting US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State in the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor (DRL) Thomas O. Melia and his accompanying delegation. During the meeting, Al Attiyah gave a detailed explanation about the objectives and mandate of the committee and the most prominent complaints received by the Committee, adding that the NHRC plays a major role in spreading awareness and education in the field of human rights as a consultative body and raises important observations about legislation to the executive bodies in the State, as well as its annual report on human rights situation to governmental and non-governmental institutions. Al Attiyah emphasized that most of the problems and complaints received by the Committee are often related to small companies and added that large companies in Qatar are almost free of problems. Finally, Al Attiyah stated that the NHRC organizes awareness campaigns for citizens and residents including distributing publications, and organizing workshops and training courses and seminars.
